 im bout to drop ship
this team is just falling and falling more and more on the graphs. i might leave soon and go to another group, it seems like fourm activity has dropped and same with folding, for what reason? i fold almost 24/7 with my gpu and (i got a new cpu e8600 overclocked to 4.05Ghz) two cores. even when i am gaming i am folding for 44851. i got my dads BluRay player (ps3) folding also and on 24/7. so explain to me why we are dropping like a dead cell?

Re: im bout to drop ship
Really, we just need more people folding on machines with good performance, end of story.
Sure, we used to do great, and I had huge numbers when I had 40+ PCs at my disposal, and GPU clients were not putting out huge points. With all the gamers out there and their ridiculous rigs, it's hard for joe average to compete.
Alas, I don't have access to those machines any longer, interest in our team has waned, and many (including myself) have gotten lazy.
Excuses aside, I just fired up my 9600 GT and it looks like I'll get 3400 ppd.
I would like to know if I have to run two Ubuntu VMs to get good performance from the regular client or not - VMware did weird stuff to my machine, and I would rather not have to screw around with it. Does anyone have info on the regular client and its performance in windows vs. linux?

Re: im bout to drop ship
run everything native. no virtual machines unless u absolutely need to! considering im running windows 7 6956 and wont be upgrading to windows 7 beta 1 anytime soon unless i hear amazing things. i think OS dosent really matter for folding, they all get their ppd that the hardware should put out. hell i was just playing tf2 and folding on my 2 cores and gpu. i just stopped the gpu folding due to temps that were getting scary and my room is a sauna atm. so a 1hr break then back to folding.

Re: im bout to drop ship
Are you certain that OS doesn't matter any more?
In the past, two dual-core Ubuntu x64 VMs running SMP on top of Windows x86 produced more PPD than 1 quad-core SMP client runing on Windows x86. Same machine, same specs.
If you know differently, I'll give it a go.

Re: im bout to drop ship
SMP is where the real points are.
Does anyone know the performance rates of the varying clients/setups?

If you have a quad core, run 2 instances of vmware. If you have a dual core machine, run 1 instance of vmware. That is if you are on windows. Fastest option is native linux though.

Re: im bout to drop ship
WHAT?! vmware or can i do virtualbox... cuz ur saying, if i ran a virtual windows on windows or linux on windows and started folding, it would be better then me running what i do now, which is 2 console fah windows and a console gpu window? should i just throw back in my q6600 and ditch my e8600 for a bit?! i kinda dont want to since that tuniq tower was a bitch it install.

Re: im bout to drop ship
A few facts:
1) The SMP client produces far more points than the regular client.
2) Using the SMP client on two cores, i.e. running one SMP client install on a dual core machine, or two SMP client installs on a quad core machine produces the most points. It is well known that the FAH client just can't keep four cores busy enough to be worth it (for now)
3) Running any number of SMP clients in Linux produce more points than running an SMP client in Windows.
4) Running a 64-bit version of Linux will also yield more points than a 32-bit OS.
Thus, on your dual core, it is best to run one SMP client in a 64-bit Linux VM.
On your Q6600, it would be best to run two different dual-core 64-bit Linux virtual machines with one SMP client on each. When I was running two VMs on my Q9300, I was getting ~4700ppd.
That is what I assumed was still the case, and LZ claims it is, so I believe it.

Re: im bout to drop ship
shit man i gotta get vmware and i assume ubuntu 64 would be the best. but im loving, so far, how well i got what i have running is going.... seems so complicated to get more ppd. today though i ran my gpu and cpu clients all day and most of last night, so this is my computer on full tilt DrNathan wrote: A few facts:

Dual GPU clients and SMP... now you're getting some mad points. But seriously, it's a shame you guys aren't folding more really. I'm gonna break the 10 million points barrier in a few months (~4 probably) and then I'll have no competition. We're falling down the ranks, too.

Re: im bout to drop ship
I can't fold anymore. My dad stopped me due to the rising electricity bills, if not I would have reached 1 mil by now. Might consider folding again once I've gotten my laptop.

Re: im bout to drop ship
Not sure how it works, but, maybe fold while you are on the comp at maybe 30% cpu utilization and then at least its better than nothing.....

EDIT THE EDIT: fuck it, ill just run 4 gpu clients on my gtx280, this is wierd but there is no slowdown on 3 even.
