if you just want to scare them you don't really need the pumpkin part...

Though nobody w/ a laser has responded yet, I think i remember reading that someone could not cut meat w/ it... something to do with it being mostly water, as a decent amount of food is (ie, pumpkin).. .Thats with the CO2 laser I think...

Couldn't you overcome the water problem by slowing the feed rate way down? It's just a thought.

(1.21 gigawatts) / (88 miles per hour) = 30757874 newtons

nah this laser cant cant cut through a whole finger. one reason is that co2 lasers cant penetrate through water, which is what meat mostly is made of. the other reason is because of divergence, the power density of the beam drops off very very quickly as it leaves the cutting nozzle. Its the molecular equivalent of shooting at a target with a shotgun that's a mile away.

but yea, im sure you could cut stuff like that, just have to go really slowwwwww
maybe someone with a laser will post about their efforts.

They use laser to stain foods (they are lasering brand names into produce now, rather than putting those stickers on them), but I've never heard of cutting or carving foods with lasers. In any case, you would absolutely not have enough money to come close to buying a laser with enough power to do any serious cutting to foods.

HAHA, but just imageine that carving station.

Lead Aprons, Radiation Goggles, Evil Lab Coats. It would be the most kick-ass carving station at any brunch ever!

But in all seriousness, wouldn't a laser powerfull enough to cut through meat end up cooking it too?
