Do you have to use the router for FON or can you just use it as a router?

I bought the original Linksys back when FON started. I've been using it ever since, except i removed the FON firmware and put my own on it. Seeing as I can never pass up free gear I just ordered up one of these. I wonder how easy they will be to hack and but my own firmware on them. Does anyone know the specs of these routers they are giving away?

I think that they're fon specific.

Nope, there's hacking a plenty to be had.

Google "Fonera Hacking" and there's a bunch of info about hacking it via the web interface (Fon patched the latest hack, but there will be more).

There's also info about hacking it via the built-in serial interface.

I dug up some stuff on simulating the "Fon home" heartbeat as well. I bookmarked the links at work, I'll post them up tomorrow.

Oh yeah, got mine ordered too. Thanks Cerberus.

I may just have to get one sent to work as well...

Do they check if you register it?
Because it may take me a while to get it set up.

It does not Look like I could really set it up anywhere, Comcast does not allow it. I am still trying to decided whether SBC does or not

Well it looks like neither Comcast nor SBC(AT&T) allow such a thing but I may sneak it under with some QoS and a third NIC in my smoothwall

Ordered and anxiously awaiting shipment.

I don't even think I'll end up plugging it in without disabling the FON communications first. I'll be interested in seeing what kind of wireless router this thing really is and what (if any) third paty software (OpenWRT or DD-WRT) can be installed on it.

I plan on hacking away once I get mine. I'll provide full write-ups

Well I knew the original routers were full-on WRT54GL inksys routers with new firmware on them, but I'm still unsure as to the models pictured on the site and listed under the order form. They're definately not WRT54GLs so I'm curious if the current brand of *WRT firmware will work on them.

Now all he has to do is get packet filtering working and I'll be a happy man.
