Installing XBMC on Oneiric Ocelot 11.10
There are 800 posts consisting of type this crap in terminal and you will have XBMC:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Well sure, that was easy. Except when you try to run apt-get update you will notice a 404 on the sources you have added that is because the lights are on but no ones home. Simple solution. Open up update manager, open settings, click on other software, and change your distro type from ‘oneiric’ to ‘maverick’
So here it is:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc
Change distro(see above oneiric to maverick)
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
You should be all set.
X-Men: First Class – Review
I read Penny Arcade’s comic strip describing the mutants found in the prequel X-Men movie as “Bleg”. So I wasn’t expecting much out of this action flick, but was lured in by my local $3 dollar theater. Even the trailers I had seen hadn’t totally appealed to me. So when I sat down in my soft chair, I totally expected some gimmicky hero movie. After coming out of it, I think lots of people think it is either one or the other and don’t really see what the true nature of the movie is.
Let me explain. What I think the Penny Arcade folks were trying to say goes beyond pointing out the non-combat abilities of certain characters. A few of those good ‘ole mutants benefit from the intellect others, to find ways to control and manipulate their abilities. Without that push, they would end up being fairly useless. Who knows what other useless thins were in their predecessors. These abilities could be as useless as a double jointed finger or other such abnormalities that don’t do anything for humans these days. The movie strives to go beyond the limitations of the idea of that comic, by not only delivering powerful actions scenes but also insight into the human condition of evolution. To further delve into this idea, Magneto’s past is explored. The days of the Nazis and the hunting of the Jews directly foretells Eric’s fears towards the new breed of humans known as mutants. By stepping into the light, they are exposing themselves to those who would fear their new abilities. X-Men: First Class doesn’t aim to answer this question, but true to being a prequel sets the stage for many characters to later struggle with the same idea.
Let me settle the score about what this movie is. It is neither gimmicky nor a hero movie. This is a down right villain movie. These villains downright stomp on the world announcing themselves. After all, they say that without villain there would be no heroes. The pattern starts to merger, the heroes face the same question over and over again. Some even buckle and start to see the other side. Of course, then we get back to reality. Awesome action is found everywhere. Actions and heart wrenching scenes: the heart wrenching the gates of a German prison camp, the actions of Hank McCoy, and the betrayal of allies. Everything lends itself to being another excellent X-Men film. Of course, I think we could have done without the few seconds of Wolverine, but to each their own cameo. I think this was an excellent film and a worthy addition to the series. What does everyone else think?
Full Screen Split Screen Using 3D Vizio TV
I had to share this simply because Mike didn’t watch the video all the way through and started complaining about the Sony TV mentioned.
YouTube user sinabun12si heard the news as well about the 24″ Sony 3D TV announced at E3 that would allow split screen games to be played across the full screen using 3D technology. However, Sina has already been doing this as he shows in his video below.
You’ll see above that he is using the top/bottom feature of his 42″ 3D Vizio TV to display two separate video game screens in Black Ops. The glasses are regular 3D glasses available from movies theaters, but modified to have the same polarity lenses. This allows two people to play split screen on the full TV while preventing the dreaded screen watching! I think it’s pretty sweet and when I get rid of my Sony Wega next year I think I will be looking for one of these.
L.A. Noire: The Collected Stories Free Download
Today the full short story collection of the crime ridden world of L.A. Noire is completely free. Rockstar has previously release several short stories on their website, but this anthology completes the set with 3 previously unreleased stories. This limited offer is extended for those who pre-ordered the game, or if you purchase the game by June 12th. After that, the price goes up to a meager 99 cents. It is available at three major retailers online; Amazon, iTunes, and Barnes & Noble. You can bet I’ve got it ready to go already for my Nook!
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood – Mobile RPG Announcement
This summer, FUNimation and Good Game Productions will release a Fullmetal Alchemist turn based RPG. Entitled Fullmetal Battle, players will be able to access the game via iOS, Android, and Facebook. They hope to capture long time fans of the series and newcomers to the world with the game’s fast paced group battles. Players will be able to create their own state licensed alchemist complete with abilities inspired by the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood series. They can also challenge characters from the series such as the main two, the Elric brothers. Although the press release says you will be given helpful hints from Col. Roy Mustang, any fan knows that Mustang’s hints are generally not very helpful. The most interesting aspect seems to be the group battles. Players have to fight together in 3 vs 3 battles, but the experience and leveling will take place separately through the special abilities each player selected. I can say that I am excited to see this when it arrives.
Winter is coming
Game of thrones, is an epic fantasy show based in medieval times produced by HBO. Based on a popular book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. The book series is a fantastic political and action series set in ancient times sprinkled with bits of dark humor. The show much like the books pull no punches, which you would know had you watched the first episode and its final minute cliffhanger. The main characters are likeable and despise-able in their own ways and the action is consistent with expectations.
This show is so good HBO has set them up with a second season already! Here watch the first 15 minutes and tell me you aren’t gonna watch at least one episode.
I know right?
I don’t feel comfortable talking any more about this series as I do not wish to ruin it. It is fantastic, if you miss it you will regret it.
Matt Guest Stars In 20 Sides of Nerd Podcast
Our good friend Marrisa’s Dad of MarrissasBunny.com started up a podcast. Since his guests who were attending PAX ended up partying instead of podcasting, I was asked to fill in. We covered a wide range of topics including a People’s Court case involving a Wii modder, the Halo Defiant map pack, and more. Head over to Marissa’s Bunny to get the podcast. Also, I go by my pseudonym snorkle256; I hope it doesn’t confuse anyone.
Minecraft Penny Arcade Tribute
This isn’t really a tribute to Penny Arcade as a whole, just a recurring character that I happen to be fond of. The following is not my work, nor do I care for Minecraft at all, but I had to share it with you all nonetheless.
Behold!

Crazy Backyard Ninja Goes Crazy
This guy seems to really be enjoying his Samurai sword, perhaps a little too much. Don’t get me wrong – if I got my hands on something this sharp and knew how to use it, I might end the life of a few plastic bottles myself. However, something makes me think that this guy takes things a bit too seriously. The video is pretty entertaining, but it gets even better when the water bottles don’t cooperate.

ThinkGeek Effervescent Bacon Drink Tab Review
After my awful experience with the Effervescent Cupcake Drink Tabs from ThinkGeek, I was hesitant to try the bacon-flavored tabs I also ordered. However, in the name of science, I decided to give them a shot anyway. How bad could they be?
Upon opening the tin, I was actually pleasantly surprised – I was greeted by the scent of well-smoked bacon. Thankfully, these tabs, unlike the cupcake tabs, actually smelled like the product they purported to taste like. They looked the same, and unfortunately behaved the same when submerged in water. I popped 3 tablets into my mug and watched as the Bacon Chum slowly formed.
I honestly couldn’t bring myself to drink from the scum-covered pond of bacon water that occupied my mug. Instead, I popped one of the bacon-flavored tablets into my mouth, re-enacting my cupcake tab experiment. This time around was just as awful, albeit a lot more smokey. I would liken the experience to guzzling half a bottle of Liquid Smoke. I quickly chewed the tablet to end my misery, then I sucked down a cup of coffee to rid myself of the “bacon” aftertaste.
Again, I was sorely disappointed with my flavor drink experience. If I ever dare to purchase a fun candy product from ThinkGeek, I hope to fare better than I did this time around.
